Summary

Celaena Sardothien is the most respected and feared assassin in the land. But, for the last year she has been forced to work in the salt mines and endure punishment beyond imagination. The Crown Prince however has a proposal, become his champion and enter a competition. She must defeat twenty-three other assassins, thieves and murderers in a series of tests. If she wins she will become the Kings assassin and work for him for four years, and then, freedom. If she loses, its back to the salt mine. She accepts and starts to train, along the way she befriends the Crown Prince, the Captain of the Guard and a foreign Princess. But, when her competitors start to die she must fight for her survival and take on a quest to exterminate an evil before its to late.

Pros

  • Characters: Celaena is awesome, she’s deadly, sarcastic and doesn’t take anything from anyone. What more could you want in an female anti-hero? Yes, she is a hero but, she was an assassin and when she is free, she fully intends to go back to her murderous ways. It was a good idea for her to be so mysterious too, it keeps you guessing, and you never find out. I also like Nehemia, and I’m glad that Celaena got such a good friend.
  • Plot: I like the idea of an assassin as the main character and the idea of a fight for freedom. Its willing to drive anyone to do anything. And the dash of mystery thrown in is great, murder mysteries are my favorite.
  • Pacing: The pacing was great. You got to know each character so well, but it didn’t linger.

Cons

  • The Plot Twist: Honestly, I don’t think Cain was smart enough to do all that. And I felt he was a poor choice as a antagonist. Besides it was too obvious, he obviously hated Celaena and she pointed out his odd behavior. It would have been much better if it had been a less obvious person.

I liked this book a lot, I definitely recommend this book to anybody who’s a fan of fantasy and strong heroines. So, I give this book five out six emoji stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
